Providing Braking Power - The Most Central Role
Modern medium and heavy-duty trucks universally use air brake systems. The compressed air generated by the air compressor is stored in air reservoirs. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the compressed air activates the brake chambers, forcing the brake pads against the brake drums to generate braking force.
Importance: Air brakes provide greater force and are more reliable than hydraulic brakes, forming the lifeline that ensures the safe operation of heavily loaded vehicles like trucks. Without compressed air, a truck cannot brake effectively.
Auxiliary System Operation
Clutch Boosting: The clutches in many trucks also use air assistance, making it easier to depress the clutch pedal.
Exhaust Brake (Engine Brake): Operates the exhaust valves using compressed air to achieve engine braking, reducing the burden on the service brakes, which is crucial especially on long downhill sections.
